How it works

The fruit merge game. Drop fruits into the box: two of a kind that touch become the next fruit up, from cherry to watermelon. Keep the pile under the line as long as you can. Play solo for the leaderboard or race friends with the same fruits.

  • Drop fruits one at a time; aim with the pointer or the arrow keys.
  • Two of the same fruit that touch merge into the next one up and score its points.
  • If the pile stays over the line for two seconds, the game ends.

What is FruBoo?

FruBoo is a fruit merge game. You drop fruits into a box one at a time, and when two of the same fruit touch, they merge into the next fruit up: two cherries make a strawberry, two strawberries a grape, and so on through eleven fruits to the watermelon. Two watermelons that meet pop and leave the box.

The fruits are round, so they roll, bounce a little and squash softly as they land. Every drop changes the pile, and a good one can set off a chain of merges. The game goes on until the box is too full: if the pile stays over the dashed line near the top for two seconds, it ends.

The watermelon game, in your browser

FruBoo is in the spirit of the much-loved watermelon game, where you drop fruits and merge fruits into bigger ones until a watermelon appears. Ours is a fruit puzzle with its own drawings, its own physics and its own scoring.

It is free and runs in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing to install. Solo games go on a leaderboard with Today, Week, Month and All time views. In Duo and Group rooms, friends join with a code or a link, and everyone drops the same fruits in the same order. FruBoo comes in eleven languages, in light and dark.

Who it suits and what it trains

FruBoo suits anyone who enjoys a relaxed puzzle with a little tension at the end. The clock doesn’t count against you, so you can take your time over every drop. It trains planning and a feel for space: guessing where a fruit will roll, keeping small fruits away from big ones and leaving room for the next merge.

Good to know

Only the five smallest fruits – cherry, strawberry, grape, lemon and orange – are ever dropped; everything bigger has to be made. A game left half-played comes back where it was after a reload.

How to play FruBoo

Drop fruits into the box, merge two of a kind into bigger ones and score as many points as you can before the box fills up. A game usually takes three to ten minutes. You need a mouse, a keyboard or a touch screen.

The goal: merge fruits up to a watermelon

Score as many points as you can before the pile overflows. Points come from merges, and the bigger the fruit you make, the more it is worth. Reaching a watermelon is the big moment, but the game doesn’t stop there: keep going as long as the box has room.

How a game of FruBoo goes

  1. Press Play. The fruit you are holding hangs at the top of the box, with a dotted guide showing where it will fall. The fruit after that one is shown beside the score, marked Next.
  2. Aim left or right with the pointer, your finger or the arrow keys.
  3. Drop it. It falls, rolls and settles on the pile. After a short pause the next fruit is ready.
  4. When two of the same fruit touch, they merge into the next fruit up, which grows to its full size and nudges its neighbours aside. If it then touches its own twin, it merges again, so one drop can start a chain.
  5. Two watermelons that touch pop and leave the box, for a bonus.
  6. Keep the pile under the dashed line. If it stays over the line too long, the box is full and your result opens.

Scoring and the leaderboard

The eleven fruits, smallest first, are cherry, strawberry, grape, lemon, orange, apple, pear, peach, pineapple, melon and watermelon. Each merge scores the points of the fruit it makes: strawberry 3, grape 6, lemon 10, orange 15, apple 21, pear 28, peach 36, pineapple 45, melon 55 and watermelon 66. Two watermelons popping score 66 more. Dropping a fruit scores nothing, and time doesn’t count.

When a Solo game ends, its score goes on the FruBoo leaderboard under your player name. There is one leaderboard, with one entry per player – their best – and views for Today, Week, Month and All time.

How the game ends

A dashed line runs across the top of the box. A fruit you have just dropped may pass it while it falls. Once it has had a moment to settle, though, any fruit above the line sets off a warning: “Careful: the pile is over the line!” If a fruit is still over the line two seconds later, the box is full and the game ends.

A merge that brings the pile back under the line in time saves the game. A fruit made by a merge counts straight away, so a big merge high up can also tip you over.

The result card shows your points, the biggest fruit you made, the fruits you dropped and the time. Restart starts a new box at any point; press it twice to confirm.

Controls

  • Mouse: move over the box to aim, click to drop.
  • Touch: touch the box and slide your finger to aim; the fruit drops when you lift your finger.
  • Keyboard: Tab to the box, then aim with ← and →. Hold Shift with an arrow to move three times as far. Space, Enter or ↓ drops.
  • A fruit can’t be dropped during the short pause after the last one.

Solo, Duo and Group

Solo is one box and the leaderboard.

For Duo (two players) or Group (up to eight), choose the mode on the start screen and press Play. That opens a room with a short code; share the code or press Copy link. When everyone is in, the host presses Start round.

Everyone drops the same fruits in the same order into their own box, so the luck is the same for all; what differs is where you drop them. The players list shows everyone’s points as they play. The round ends when every box is full, or after ten minutes. Most points wins; on a tie, the bigger fruit made, then whoever lasted longer. The host starts the next round with new fruits. Room games don’t go on the leaderboard.

Tips for a bigger fruit

  • Keep your biggest fruits in one corner or along one side, and line smaller ones up next to them by size.
  • Drop a fruit next to its twin rather than on top of a different fruit; the merge happens the moment they touch.
  • Check the Next fruit before you drop, and leave a place for it.
  • Don’t bury a small fruit under big ones. It can take a long time to reach it again.
  • Fruits roll. Dropping against a wall or into a gap is easier to predict than dropping onto a round top.
  • When the warning shows, look for a merge that lowers the pile and make it first.
